Mattress for stomach sleepers: Firm support, every night
Are you a stomach sleeper? Then you are one of the few. Only a small minority sleep on their stomach, and for good reason: it is the most demanding sleeping position for your body. Your neck turns to one side and your spine tends to hollow out, especially without the right mattress.
But let's be honest: if you are a stomach sleeper, you are not going to change that overnight. So you need a mattress that works for you.
The Tuur® Pure Mattress is the mattress for stomach sleepers: a firm Naturalis® cold foam core with a soft top layer that keeps your body balanced throughout the night. Cold foam is naturally more stable and flat than other materials, and that is precisely what stomach sleepers need. View the Tuur® Pure Mattress
Why is stomach sleeping particularly demanding on a mattress?
Too soft a mattress
On a mattress that is too soft, the stomach area sinks too deep. Your spine forms a hollow arch and the pressure on your lower back increases significantly. You wake up feeling stiff or in pain, without understanding why.
Too firm a mattress
On a mattress that is too firm, you constantly feel pressure on your ribcage and stomach. This is uncomfortable and makes it hard to sleep through the night.
The right choice: firm with a soft top layer
The best mattress for stomach sleepers is firm enough to keep your hips and lower back elevated, while also having a soft top layer that takes away pressure on the stomach. Cold foam naturally provides a stable, flat sleeping surface: ideal for stomach sleepers.
What should a mattress for stomach sleepers offer?
Firm support in the core
The core must be sufficiently firm to prevent your hips from sinking too deep. This keeps your spine as straight as possible, even when lying on your stomach.
Soft top layer for comfort on the stomach
A soft top layer takes pressure away from your stomach, ribcage and hips. Without that softness, a firm mattress feels uncomfortable.
Good support in the neck zone
Because stomach sleepers lie with their head turned to one side, the neck is in a rotated position all night. The mattress must also provide good stability in the neck zone.
Breathable materials
Stomach sleepers have more body contact with the mattress. A mattress that retains heat creates an uncomfortable sleeping climate. Naturalis® cold foam has an open cell structure that ventilates exceptionally well.
Stable, flat sleeping surface
Stomach sleepers do not want a mattress that is too point-elastic in the hip zone. Cold foam naturally provides a stable, flat sleeping surface that prevents the lower back from sagging.
The Tuur® Pure Mattress for stomach sleepers
The Tuur® Pure Mattress is specifically recommended for stomach sleepers. The firm Naturalis® cold foam core combined with a soft top layer is exactly the construction stomach sleepers need. Here is why.
Naturalis® cold foam: firmer and more stable
The Tuur® Pure Mattress is made of Naturalis® cold foam, an innovative material in which part of the petroleum has been replaced by castor oil (from the castor plant). Cold foam has an open cell structure that provides excellent ventilation and pressure distribution. For stomach sleepers, the stability of cold foam is a major advantage: the mattress gives where needed, but keeps your hips and lower back firmly elevated.
Excellent ventilation for a cool sleeping climate
The open cell structure of Naturalis® cold foam provides better ventilation than traditional polyether foam. Even as a stomach sleeper, with a lot of body contact, you sleep cool throughout the night.
Dual comfort: choose your firmness
The Tuur® Pure Mattress comes with two firmness levels in one reversible core: a medium side and a firmer side. For stomach sleepers, we recommend starting on the firmer side. Want more pressure relief on your stomach? Simply flip it and feel the difference. No fuss, no technician.
Firm core, soft finish
The construction: 18 cm Naturalis® cold foam core (density 40 kg/m³) with a 1.5 cm cover. Hips and lower back are supported, while the stomach and ribcage feel no hard pressure.

Which firmness should you choose as a stomach sleeper?
The general guideline for stomach sleepers is: firm to medium firm. Your body weight plays an important role:
| Weight | Recommended firmness | Tuur® advice |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 60 kg | Medium firm | Start on the firmer side |
| 60 to 90 kg | Firm | Start on the firmer side |
| Above 90 kg | Firm to extra firm | Start on the firmer side, flip if desired |
Tip from Tuur®: not sure? Start on the firmer side. Feel too much pressure on your stomach? Flip it. You have 120 nights to discover what works for you.
The pillow: just as important for stomach sleepers
As a stomach sleeper, you may be making your biggest mistake with your pillow choice. Many stomach sleepers use a pillow that is too high, which puts extra strain on the neck and causes neck complaints. As a stomach sleeper, you need a low, soft pillow. With your head in a turned position, the neck should be elevated as little as possible.
The lower the pillow, the less tension on your cervical vertebrae.
Extra tip: thin pillow under the hips
Some stomach sleepers find it helpful to place a thin pillow under their hips. This helps to keep the lower back calmer and reduces the tendency towards a hollow back. A small adjustment that can make a big difference.
Stomach sleeper, but want to change?
Stomach sleeping is the least recommended sleeping position. Your neck is tilted, your spine tends to hollow out and you breathe less deeply due to the pressure on your chest. Are you sleeping on a mattress that is too firm or too soft? Then there is a good chance you keep falling back into stomach sleeping without even noticing.
A good mattress that supports your body better can, over time, make it easier to switch to side or back sleeping. Investing in the right mattress for stomach sleepers can therefore improve your entire sleeping posture in the long run.
