Why does rumination often get worse in the evening?
During the day, distractions such as children and household tasks occupy the brain; in the evening, those distractions disappear. Additionally, the stress hormone cortisol only starts dropping about 2 hours before bedtime, and unresolved thoughts (open loops) still demand attention.
