Frequently asked questions about horsehair mattresses
No, quite the opposite. Horsehair used in mattresses undergoes a thorough cleaning process (washed at 140°C, without chemicals) and is afterwards 100% free of allergens.
• Naturally anti-mite, antibacterial and mould-resistant
• House dust mites find no breeding ground in the dry, well-ventilated structure
• For people with allergies, horsehair is often a healthier choice than synthetic alternatives
A high-quality horsehair mattress lasts an average of 15 to 25 years - one of the longest lifespans of any mattress type.
• Cold foam: 8-10 yrs | Natural latex: 12-15 yrs | Horsehair + latex: 15-25 yrs ✓
• Horsehair barely loses its resilience or structure after years of use
• Maintenance: rotate every 3-6 months, air regularly and use a mattress protector
Yes and their popularity is growing. Horsehair is a centuries-old tradition that never disappeared and is once again in demand due to the growing interest in natural, sustainable sleep products.
• Luxury brands like Hästens and Vispring use it as their main material
• Tuur® Original Plus combines horsehair with 100% natural latex - handmade in Europe
• Certified, free of harmful substances and fully traceable
Horsehair mattresses are more expensive due to the labour-intensive, artisanal production and the scarcity of the premium material - but they last 15-25 years, making the annual cost exceptionally low.
• Each mattress is layered by hand - cannot be fully automated
• Long curled horsehair (tail/mane) is limited in availability
• Investment that pays for itself: €1,200 / 20 years = €60/year
Horsehair is one of the most breathable and durable natural mattress materials, with unique benefits that synthetic alternatives cannot match.
• Exceptional ventilation: each hair is hollow and acts as a miniature air channel - always dry and at the right temperature
• Hypoallergenic: 100% allergen-free after processing, naturally anti-mite and antibacterial
• Lifespan of 15-25 years and ethically sourced through regular grooming of horses
